WEB Brownsville located in east Brooklyn has long been one of New York City's most dangerous neighborhoods. But even as crime rates reached record lows in the borough in recent years, Brownsville has remained an outlier, with murder rates and other violent crimes plaguing the community.

WEB They are part of the Brownsville Safety Alliance, a group of neighborhood and city groups, police officers, and members of the Kings County District Attorney's office that is working to change that. The alliance was formed in 2014, and since then, it has implemented a number of initiatives aimed at reducing crime in Brownsville, including increased police patrols, community outreach programs, and job training programs.

WEB Brownsville is in the 6th percentile for safety, meaning 94% of neighborhoods are safer and 6% of neighborhoods are more dangerous. This analysis applies to Brownsville's proper boundaries only.

WEB Officials are now looking for other neighborhoods to replicate the success of the Brownsville Safety Alliance, which removed NYPD details from their visible posts on Mother's Day weekend in 2023. The move was part of a pilot program aimed at reducing tensions between police and the community. It is too early to say what the long-term impact of the program will be, but it is a sign that the city is willing to try new approaches to addressing crime in Brownsville.
